Read about the Artist

About the Artist:

Contemporary American artist Peter Adams (B. 1950, Los Angeles) received the majority of his training at the Lukits Academy of Fine Arts in Los Angeles from 1970 through 1977, eventually becoming the personal apprentice to the renowned mural, landscape and portrait painter Theodore N. Lukits (1897-1992).

From his years with Lukits, Adams gained a heightened appreciation for Asian objects, costumes and antiquities, as these subjects were frequently used in paintings. This interest later led to his traveling throughout Asia, and in 1980 Adams became the first American artist to travel and paint unescorted through the People’s Republic of China.  In 1987 he gained great acclaim as the only American artist to ever travel and paint with Mujahideen rebels in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan.

After spending three weeks painting portraits of wounded soldiers and officers at the Ibne Sina Hospital controlled by the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan in Peshawar, Pakistan, Adams was escorted by a group of fifteen Mujahideen across the border into Afghanistan. Dyeing his beard and hair dark brown, the 6’2” blonde Adams successfully entered into Kunar Province by way of an ambulance, posing as a dead casualty of war. Adams journeyed with these “freedom fighters” as they proceeded on their mission to transport medical supplies and ammunition into war-torn areas. All along the way Adams painted scenes of the Afghan people and their land as a way to record an ancient culture that may soon be changed.
